Materials development & manufacturing scale-up

Materials

Fine manufacturing powder viewed under magnification

VEC works as an extension of the materials science team for an innovative composites additive manufacturing company as it scales its technology toward production. Support includes developing and evaluating new powder materials, materials characterization, process development, and technical guidance to transition new materials and applications into production.

Automotive AM strategy & adoption

Automotive

Precision manufactured metal component

VEC supported a billion-dollar automotive OEM in evaluating additive manufacturing for its extensive spare-parts portfolio. Working with senior leadership and engineering teams, VEC identified and evaluated high-value part candidates, helped develop the company's first internal specifications for 3D printing, and identified and vetted qualified manufacturing partners.

Defense manufacturing & workforce readiness

Defense

Additively manufactured lattice structure

VEC supported a U.S. Manufacturing Innovation Institute initiative focused on expanding the use of polymer additive manufacturing for UAV production, modification, and repair. VEC helped capture real-world AM workflows and best practices and translate technical expertise into practical, operator-focused training designed to scale across the defense manufacturing workforce.

Healthcare AM & regulatory strategy

Healthcare

Detailed generatively designed metal lattice

VEC served as a technical subject matter expert to a leading healthcare organization as it developed an internal additive manufacturing capability. The engagement included technical guidance through FDA regulatory and approval processes, development of 3D printing lab capabilities and workflows, and support establishing the technical foundation needed to safely and effectively deploy AM for clinical applications.

REG / 05

Regional AM accelerator

Regional programs

VEC partnered with Notre Dame Industry Labs to develop and lead a regional Additive Manufacturing Accelerator focused on helping manufacturers identify and implement high-value AM applications. The program engaged 6–10 companies through site visits, application discovery, technical evaluation, and hands-on prototyping, resulting in multiple successful AM applications and helping participating companies build the technical and business case for broader adoption.

DIG / 06

Digital inventory & sustainment

Sustainment

VEC supported a major defense manufacturer in developing a digital inventory strategy for repair and sustainment components. The engagement included identifying suitable part candidates, supporting 3D capture and digital model development, and redesigning components for additive manufacturing where appropriate.

EDU / 07

Additive manufacturing workforce development

Workforce

VEC developed and delivered the Advanced Manufacturing eXperience (AMx), a hands-on workforce development program designed to build pathways into additive manufacturing careers. Working with university and industry partners, the program combines technical AM education, real-world industry projects, facility tours, and professional skills development to give participants practical experience while helping manufacturers develop a pipeline of emerging technical talent.
